I thought I'd try something a little different this time. Lotsa pictures, but there's a visual description at the bottom, too!

Please scroll to the bottom for a visual description...thank you!

Visual Description!

(Strip one: Three panels of details of a young couple, photo from the 1960s.)

Once you told me that you were done with people. You'd had enough. They were all the same. (I wouldn't understand.)

You said you were breaking up with her. And spending the money you'd saved up for the ring on other things.

---

(Strip two: Three panels of details of children at a birthday party, photo from the 1960s. We see cake and smiling children.)

An Xbox doesn't have a birthday, you said. Nothing to forget. And I said. There's nothing to forget, but there's nothing to remember. An Xbox doesn't have birthday cake. No frosting fights or silly hats. No memories to turn into stories to turn into tradition.

Nobody to say remember when:

'You barely came up to my knee'
'The first time I saw you behind the wheel'
'We shared a drink on your 21st'

----

(Strip three: Three panels of details of a vintage Greetings From California postcard. The letters are filled in with illustrations of famous CA sites.)

You said an HDTV doesn't ask me where I'm going. There's nobody waiting up worrying. And I said. There's nobody worrying about you, but there's nobody caring about you, either. (An HDTV doesn't sweep you off, spur-of-the-moment on a fantastic interstate road trip adventure.)

An HDTV doesn't send you postcards that say:

'I saw this and thought of you'
'I wish you were here'
'I can't wait to see your smile again'

----

(Strip four: Three panels of details of an empty road with telephone poles along the road.)

A dirt bike won't say the wrong thing. There's nobody to let me down. You said. And I said. There's nobody to let you down. But there's nobody to lift you up either. A dirt bike won't answer your texts at 1:00 am when you can't sleep. (Even if they live in NYC and it's a whole hour later.)

A dirt bike won't say things like:

'You've done it before and you can do it again'
'I love you. I believe in you'
'I'm not hanging up until I hear you smile'

----

(Strip five: three panels. The first one is of a boy in a school photo from the 1950s, the second is a grey blurry panel, and the third is a young girl in a school photo from the 1950s.)

Stuff is nice. Not real. I said.

And then you said. I'm hanging up on you. (And you did, without the slightest smile in your voice.)

I didn't hear from you for a long time.

Until...

----

(Strip six: Three panels. The first one has a postmark over a moth stamp. The second and third are images of birds flying against a rainbow sky.)

One day I got a postcard. It had birds on the front, and a rainbow. It said I wish you were here.

And I really do, you wrote on the back, because you wouldn't see a dirt bike in my driveway. Or an HDTV on my wall. Not even an Xbox.

But you would see her ring. And how it shines when she smile. It's the realest thing I've ever seen in my life.

Thanks or mebbe apologies go to a softer world, where I blatantly stole borrowed the beautiful format. And to Family Old Photos where I got most of the photos. Nope, the pictures aren't me, so that's even bearing false witness too, right? XD

Plus the photos are mostly from the 'unidentified' category...so if you see somebody you recognize, lemme know, I guess? X3

Last but not ever least, this entry is brought to you by [livejournal.com profile] therealljidol, which is filled with much awesomesauce and cream filling.

GDI ILU and I barely even know youuuu. Aaaahhh this was so beautiful and such oomph and the pictures that you picked were so cool and I am not sure I get the 'false witness' bit right now since I am too busy FLAILING so who cares right?

Srsly. You. Are so great. This was such fun and so sweet of a story.

[identity profile] hug-machine.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
STOPPIT I ARE BLUSHING. XD

Honestly? Thank you. It means a lot. ♥

And yeaaaah, it's kinda tricky explainin' how it exactly fits the topic and I kinda hem 'n hawed about writing more meta to explain it, but I kinda decided against it.

BUT SINCE YOU ASKED. XD The point is kinda that STUFF bears false witness, if that makes sense. It distracts us from the real important things, the real things. In short, it distracts us from the love of other living things. :3

I really like the message in this. People may be full of shit, but they also give us more joy than stuff. :D

[identity profile] hug-machine.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Stuff can only go so far! :]

[identity profile] lovewas.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
You're so awesome.

[identity profile] hug-machine.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So are YOU!

...unless you're STUFF and not a PERSON.

...you're not STUFF, are you?

*shifty eyes*

Heck, even if you were stuff, you'd still be pretty awesome. ♥

Brilliant! I really loved the bare bones essentials that was the text in this piece, it would have worked fine as a narrative poem. But by putting it to pictures you've enhanced the meaning, and turned what would have been a nice, solid entry into something that will actually stay in my memory. While I've liked your past posts alright, for me this was the first time you really stepped out of the crowd for me. Good job! I'm all teary eyed now, and will never look at my bike quite the same way again.

[identity profile] hug-machine.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeaaah, I actually had a lot more written but it was waaay too wordy for the comics format, so I had to challenge myself to communicate with only the most crucial words. It was a challenge!

And TY! It really means a lot, seriously. ♥

[identity profile] supremegoddess1.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
This? Awesome and beautiful and true.

I missed you when you used a bye last week...

You make my cynical heart grow.

[identity profile] hug-machine.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
D'awwh, ty!

I missed LJ Idol, too! But I just needed a little break. It feels GOOD to be back. :3

[identity profile] zia-narratora.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
CAT! Your stuff gets better and better every week!

[identity profile] hug-machine.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
XD D'awwh, thank you. I dunno, though, that prolly means I'm building up to a spectacular fail soon enough. >>'

...maybe I'll decide to post a field guide to boogers or something.

XD TY! ♥

[identity profile] cacophonesque.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Cat, this is awesome! And I love how you keep surprising me each week. The staccato nature of the dialogue and the selection of images made the whole thing sing. It's simply gorgeous.

[identity profile] hug-machine.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
asjdh TY! ♥

Though I can't really take all the credit. I bectcha you'd like a softer world if you don't already. :3

Really creative. Good job;.

[identity profile] hug-machine.livejournal.com 2009-11-18 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
TY! It was fun to make (but hard to come up with something to fit the theme...)!

[identity profile] rejeneration.livejournal.com 2009-11-19 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! I really, really loved the story you were telling and the presentation was so unique! Awesome job!

I did notice a tiny typo that I thought you might like to know about. In the third still on the second row you say 'the first i time saw you'. I think you meant 'the first time i saw you'. -smile-

[identity profile] hug-machine.livejournal.com 2009-11-20 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
XD You're right! I didn't even see that!

hdsjkh I'll hafta fix that.

And TY!

THIS made me smile and tear up and do all of the crazy-wonderful things that a good entry can do. <333 amaaaaaaaazing!

also, I love the photos you chose. and the text - because it was a bit hard to read at times, but it made me have to work harder...and was totally awesome in the end!

[identity profile] hug-machine.livejournal.com 2009-11-23 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Eeee, how did I miss this comment?

Gosh, you're way too sweet. I'm glad you liked it!

I was a little worried that it'd be too hard to read, and maybe next time I'd make the text bold!

Thank you! ♥

Probably the most creative entry I've read this season! You just step it up a notch every week. I really look forward to your entries every week just to see what you'll do next. *claps*

[identity profile] hug-machine.livejournal.com 2009-11-22 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
agsdjhasd! You're way too sweet.

Really, I think I'd get bored if I did it the same way all the time...I gotta shake things up every once in a while. :3
